Hive Transportation
According to the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service data, the U.S. is home to approximately 2.8 million honey bee colonies. Some 600,000 of these colonies reside in California.
California’s almond industry will utilize 2 to 2.5 million colonies during its bloom period. To meet this demand, migratory beekeepers truck 1.5 to 2 million honeybee colonies into California from across the country.
To prevent the spread of pests and disease, semi-truckloads of bees entering California are inspected at border protection stations and again upon arrival.
