Letter from CSBA President, Orin Johnson:

Dear Fellow Beekeepers and Friends,

You are cordially invited to attend the 118th Annual California State Beekeepers Association Convention, November 13-15 at Harrah’s, Lake Tahoe.  This has been an unprecedented year for the beekeeping industry.  With this in mind, I have tried to invite outstanding speakers who will address current issues and topics.  At our Research Luncheon, Amanda Ellis, Florida Dept. of Agriculture, will discuss ‘The Effects of Parasites on Honey Bee Pollination Efficacy’.  During the convention, honey bee colony size and strength, nutrition, bee lab research, the seedless mandarin issue and, of course, CCD will be addressed.

Our room rate at Harrah’s is $89.00 per night (plus tax).  Harrah’s is also offering us a limited number of rooms at Harvey’s newly refurbished Mountain Tower at $59.00 per night (plus tax).  So there should be a room rate to fill every attendees needs.  If we do not meet our guaranteed number of room nights, the CSBA will be required to pay a penalty.  The contract also requires a specified minimum for meals that the organization has planned during the convention.  These guarantees are what enable CSBA to hold its convention.  You will be helping me make this convention a great success if you reserve your rooms early. IN ORDER TO GET THESE ROOM RATES, YOUR ROOM RESERVATION MUST BE MADE BY OCTOBER 29, 2007.  I encourage you to make your reservations early, as we will be competing with the ‘World Series of Poker’ scheduled at Harvey’s during that week.  Please refer to the ‘2007 Convention Instructions and Information’ sheet for hotel reservations.  (You can also find more information on hotel reservations on the events page of this website).  When making your reservations, identify yourself as a CSBA convention attendee using CODE S11BEE and specify whether you want to stay at Harrah’s or Harvey’s.  Sending your convention registration to Patti Johnson, as soon as possible, also helps us to plan the activities.  PRE-REGISTRATION FOR THE CONVENTION WILL END OCTOBER 30, 2007.

It will have been 50 years since my father, Charles A. Johnson, opened the 68th annual CSBA convention at the Hotel Stockton, in Stockton CA as its President.  I would like to thank the CSBA Board members and beekeepers who have helped me throughout the year.  I thank you for having given me the opportunity to serve as your President and follow in my father’s footsteps.  I hope you will enjoy our 2007 Convention.  If you have any problems making your reservations or need more information, don’t hesitate to call me.

Sincerely,

Orin Johnson, CSBA President

25th ANNUAL PALO CEDRO HONEYBEE FESTIVAL

SEPTEMBER 9-10, 2006

The grounds at Bishop Quinn High School in Palo Cedro were a hive of activity as honey-loving spectators supported their community at the annual Honeybee Festival.  An estimated 7,500 to 8,000 people visited over the weekend, according to the chairwoman of the Festival.

The high school quad was filled with dozens of booths operated by local businesses and organizations.  Fronting the group was the Shasta Beekeepers Association booth where this year’s American Honey Queen, Jolene Hoefs, talked with kids and adults about bees and honey.

$500 REWARD*

*A $500 reward is offered for information leading to return of both forklift and trailer and

resulting in the arrest and conviction of person(s) responsible.

*CSBA also offers up to $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest

and conviction of anyone found destroying or stealing property belonging to one

of its members.

Forklift and Trailer were stolen from behind locked gate near the

intersection of Highway 156 and San Felipe Road between Monday,

February 27, 2006 (afternoon) and Thursday, March 2, 2006 (late morning).

Forklift:

Swinger, Model 100, Mfg.1979

Serial Number 1001398

(Serial Number is located in front of driver’s seat on

a plate attached to the front of the engine cover.)

Forklift has been repainted a bright yellow and in

some places the original color (lime green) shows

through (mostly around front and forks). There are

bee stencils on the forklift. The bees appear to be

flying and carrying a lunch pail. The two towers in

front have been shortened so it can only be used

as a lift.

Trailer:

Trailer was recovered by the CHP on

February 15, 2007 in Gilroy, Ca.
